Chiropractic Care Reduces Opioid Prescription for Lower Back Pain by 68% - British Medical Journal Open
Patients recently diagnosed with sciatica (a form of lower back pain that radiates into the leg) who were given chiropractic adjustments were much less likely to be prescribed a pain medication called Tramadol, according to this recent study.
Many studies have found opioid prescription to be much lower for lower back patients undergoing chiropractic care, but this recent study quantifies it after comparing the clinical outcomes of 1171 patient files matched for age, health status, and initial pain level, and Tramadol prescription.
The study examined non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, physio therapy, and lumbar (or lower back) advanced imaging against pain reduction outcomes and found that the reduction of Tramadol use was specifically associated with chiropractic care.
Chiropractic is beneficial for much more than simply pain management, but if you or someone you care for is suffering with lower back pain, research has shown for decades that there are few treatments that get better results than chiropractic care.
And, of course, there are major concerns about addiction with opioids.
