Prevent Winter Falls with These 3 Tips
Losing your balance and falling on ice is painful, embarrassing, and potentially dangerous. Try these tips to reduce the likelihood that you’ll fall and hurt yourself.
1. Scan your path
· Many people fall because they assume the pathway will be consistent. If it was clear 10 feet ago, they assume it will be clear 10 feet from now.
· You can often SPOT ice hidden under a dusting of snow if you’re consciously looking for it.
2. Check your footwear
· Your favourite boots may be warm and comfortable but what about the sole? Is it worn? Is it slick? Choosing footwear with a good, lugged sole will help reduce slips and falls. You can also get slip on studded oversoles for your shoes!
3. Widen your base
· When your Spidey sense tells you there is an increased tripping hazard, widen your base and shorten your stride in order to keep your center of balance INSIDE the base made by your feet.
· If your Spidey sense is REALLY tingling, put your arms out like a tight rope walker.
