That Tightness in Your Shoulders is More Than Simply Stress. You Can Help Yourself This Way…

Do you sit at your computer and fidget and move to try and get that rock-hard tension in your shoulders to relax?

Or maybe you’ve taken advantage of every intervention your company offers, from a sit-stand desk to a full-on ergonomics evaluation, all to no avail.

And you’re seeing your massage therapist regularly, but it always seems to return eventually.

I’ve heard people who suffer with this shoulder tension explain it away by saying “it’s just where I keep my stress”, as if there is nothing they can do about it.

There is a tonne you can do to help yourself with this kind of problem.

Let’s start with an ergonomics evaluation at work and regular massage therapy.  Good start.

Next, let’s see if your pillow is supporting your head properly while you sleep (one third of your life is spent sleeping.  That’s a lot of time for bad stuff to add up. 

Then, we need to evaluate your postural discipline.

And lastly, we need to assess the movement and integrity of your spine, specifically your neck. 

As a Chiropractor, I frequently see people with this “chronic upper back ache and tension” who think they just have to live with it or do something to manage it on a regular basis.

With these people we often see degenerative changes in their neck on x-ray including a reduction or complete LOSS of the normal C-shaped curve.

Chiropractors can use specific adjustments and at-home exercises to partially, and in some cases, fully restore this curve.

How will THAT help with shoulder pain, ache, and tension?

As the curve is reduced, the muscles of the upper back and shoulders are pulled tighter and tighter until you have chronic ache and tightness in that area.

As well, loss of the normal C-shaped curve can put pressure on the nerves exiting the spine which will lead to spasm and pain in the corresponding muscles.

So, the truth is, you don’t have to suffer or just live with it.  There’s lots that can be done to help you live life well.
